Filmmuseum Potsdam
The Filmmuseum Potsdam was founded in 1981 as the “Film Museum of the GDR”, making it the oldest film museum with its own collection and exhibitions in Germany, and was given its current name in 1990. Since 1991, it has been sponsored by the state of Brandenburg and is organizationally part of the Babelsberg Film University. The collections and the permanent exhibition focus on the world's oldest film studio in Babelsberg, its film productions and the artists who worked there on films by Bioscop, Ufa, DEFA and Studio Babelsberg. Temporary exhibitions, family exhibitions and foyer exhibitions on German and international film and media topics complement the exhibition program. The Film Museum runs a museum store and a cinema with several screenings a day; silent film screenings are accompanied by music on the historic Welte cinema organ.
The museum is housed in the stables of the Potsdam City Palace.
The growing collection houses holdings on Babelsberg's film history, cinema and film technology as well as the estates and bequests of around 250 filmmakers and much more.
The new building for the collections and restoration departments, which will open in 2022 and is centrally located in the media city of Babelsberg, will have 6,300 m² of usable space, twice as much as before. Its location on the campus of the Babelsberg Film University will also create synergies in the areas of research and teaching. The public display depot with changing exhibits is an asset for visitors to the neighboring film park as well as guests of the Film University and the archive. The location and visibility should further increase the attractiveness of the location “Media City Babelsberg” as well as the city of Potsdam as the current “UNESCO Creative City of Film”.
