Berliner Volksbühne

The Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz is a theater in Berlin-Mitte. The historic theater was founded in 1890 during a founding meeting of the Freie Volksbühne association. Today's theater is located on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in the Mitte district, where was the GDR's capital.

After severe war damage, the theater was reopened on April 21, 1954 with Schiller's Wilhelm Tell. From 1974 to 1977, Benno Besson shaped the appearance of the Volksbühne as artistic director and artistic director. In the fall of 1989, actors and students of the Volksbühne actively participated in the mass protests in the GDR, such as the large Berlin demonstration on November 4, 1989, which led to the peaceful revolution and the fall of the Wall.

After the fall of the Wall, Frank Castorf took over as artistic director; his term of office ended in 2017. Alongside Castorf, directors such as Christoph Marthaler, Christoph Schlingensief, Dimiter Gotscheff and René Pollesch developed some of their productions here. It has been called Berlin's most iconic theatre. (Source: Wikipedia)
